What You Will Learn

Speech and Debate is an extracurricular team activity in middle school and high school. Like track and field, Speech and Debate tournaments have many different events. 

This is a beginners’ course designed to introduce elementary schoolers to the writing, research and communication skills used on Speech and Debate teams. Content will include games, debates, speeches and other activities that will give them a fun and age-appropriate foundation for being a great public speaker.

Grade 3 - 5 (rising)

Prerequisite: Must be able to read at or above the 3rd-grade level

   

Course Overview

4 - 8 students	2 hours per class
Eastern Time Saturday 10:00 - 12:00 p.m. ET  Pacific Time Saturday 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. PT	10 Classes/ once a week   7/24/2021 -9/25/2021  7/24, 7/31, 8/7, 8/14, 8/21, 8/28, 9/4,  9/11, 9/18, 9/25

Lesson 5. Dramatic Performance

Lesson 6. Original Spoken Word

Lesson 7. Impromptu

Lesson 8. Extemporaneous

Lesson 9. Spontaneous Debate

Lesson 10. Student Congress

 

Course Project

The project for each unit will be to deliver a short speech or reading that fits the format of the event of the day.

 

Materials

• Laptop or desktop It will be more difficult to do this course with a phone or tablet because you will need to access the internet and read documents while being in the virtual classroom.
• Able to have access to a search engine such as Google or Bing and news websites such as CNN, NBC, or The Washington Post.
• A camera/webcam and microphone
• Have enough room to step back from your camera and be visible from the top of your head to your knees
• Pens/pencils (at least 2 different colors)
• Your favorite book (for a reading session on the first day)
• Stable Internet (Optional: ethernet cable. Wired internet makes your connection more stable)
